| I want to know what you all think. Which series is better? Harry Potter Twilight Vampire Academy or House of Night And can you tell me why? Any comments must be backed up with proof not a 'just because' or 'I just don't like it' | |

| Harry Potter and Vampire Academy win for me. Harry Potter because I gre up with it and it was just so exciting. There was always something special about the secret magical community and I loved that Jk Rowling wasn't afraid to do something (like allow so many important people to die), she continued the plot even though it killed her sometimes. Harry potter's one of the only book series that I actually read Fanfiction for, because the storyline/world is so amazing...I find that there are so many plots that are undiscovered, so fanfiction doesn't really seem like someone else's story about the characters, but more like an attempt to fill in the gaps. Sorry, major tangent...but it's proof of my Harry Potter love With VA it's sort of the same, in the way that RM doesn't hold back with her story, and I love that Rose isn't 100% imformed about her own world. There's so much being discovered by Rose and we're giving the opportunity to view it all with her. Even though the sort of problems she comes across aren't exactly normal human things (like vampires and prison breaks etc.) you still feel connected. I always feel better about a story when you can put yourself in it with absolutely no trouble at all. As for Twilight and House of Night. I do like Twilight, it was a simple story and I loved reading it. But I don't think it's better than the HP or VA. Twilight isn't well writting and I don't much like that Bella & Edward become a path for Stephenie Meyer's oppinions to seep through. Like Marriage before sex/Children most important human experience etc. I get that for some people those ideas are EXTREMELY important, and I'm not trying to judge anyone who believes in those things. I just think it's wrong that for the first few books there were no problems, but come the chance to have sex or the idea of not having children and suddenly all beliefs change. I also didn't like that Bella's vampire life becomes so easy for her. She didn't really want kids, or at least she was willing to give them up to be with Edward, and then suddenly vampires could have children so she got both. ANd Jacob was all cut up about being left lonely, but no! wait! he's in love with Renesme. And EVERYONE's going to die...but whoops, false alarm. All because SM didn't want any favourite characters to die. I do like Twilight, I have books, posters, badges, calendars etc. I'm a big fan (or at least I was before the movies) but it just can't beat VA and HP House of Night I really hate. I can't stand Zoe. I thought Bella got everything she wanted, but Zoe just pisses me off...in fact, quite a few of the characters do. I admit, I haven't finished the series. One day I will, but I just can't bring myself to be concerned with the new releases. I think the book had a lot of potenial, there was definitely room for a fantastic story, but it's just so predictible and annoying that I can't stand it. Zoe's constant stream of guys (all of which she's madly in love with) seems ridiculous to me. And I don't find it written very well. | |

| Very well put love. And you gave actual reasons and proof. And I agree with everything you said. Except for one... Twilight.. I was madly in love... But now that I've read VA... It's poorly written and entirely too much hype.... That's all I ever heard about.... I've realized that all Bella ever saw was Edward... She pretty much let him control her life.... And... I'm not a big fan of that. As for HON(House of Night) Zoe is entirely too predictable.... I'll finish the series but only because it will annoy me if I don't..... Any other opinions? | |

| Yeah, I feel the same way. Eventually I'll finish the House of Night novels, just because if I don't I'll forever be wondering what happened (though if it turns out I never finish them I won't be too disappointed).

| VA and HP for me. I couldn't even begin to read HON. I attempted to read the first chapter of book 1, couldn't help gagging over how shallow and trashy the characters were, and just quit there.
Don't even get me started on Twilight.

| Harry Potter and Va for me. I love HP because of everything Kim described. Just the writing , the story telling - the world created. As you read the series the writing and storying telling evolve and you get to see growth and development of the characters and the world. I love it. Same with VA.
Twilight- even when i was read it and was a big fan of the book- i always said its the best and worst book i ever read. Best because of the vampire/human allure forbidden romance. I'm hopeless romantic and that love story never gets old for me. But SM is a sucky writer. Liteature wise. And she can't sepearte her beleifs and her writing and she never takes chances. It shows in her writing AND in the stories.
HON- like Kim said, the world and story created has SOOOO much potential. But it's like P.C. and Kristen Cast are writing DOWN to teens and the superficial stuff over clouds the story. And it's too predictable. Zoey has bf problems, zoey saves the worlds, zoey gets a new tattoo. I actually still follow and read the series because now the sub characters and sub plots are playing a bigger role. In the last book( not giving anything away) Zoey was barely in it .. .which made me SUPER happy and for a super good read.

| Hmm. Tasha you make a good point on the HON series.. I completely agree with you on Twilight..... I am a hopeless romantice as well.. I guess that's the reason I feel in love with it.... | |

lol, something to look forward to then. You reminded me that every time Zoey got a new tattoo I'd get angry...I really didn't think she deserved them

| *Sigh* Am i supposed to find it natural that somebody forgets about the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series, by Old-man Rick Riordan[where the Councils in question are actually useful, the reasoning for illegitimate children are justified, the ancestors to Harry's own spiritual ancestor King Arthur are in there and are somewhat reliable(Zeus and Aphrodite!), and everyone's not only some sort of badassed soldier or warrior by citizenship, but is also sympathetic?] or the Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins[in which we must get with the times, everyone can fend for themselves, the government's trying to destroy the Districts by the arena's Hunger Games, and tasteful Romance?Plus a homage to the siege of the Labyrinth by Lord Theseus, a demigod son of Poseidon? Can we ask for more?]
Whoever forgot to add either of the two series[preferably both] in there while HoN is up, should get a pie upon them! *Looks for one truly good reason not to go pie someone with their favorite flavor!*

*Prevented the pie from being thrown at Dark Angel* lol What's with the aggro, Tony? Pie throwing is quite unnecessary. Though I do agree with the Hunger Games thing. For being a bestselling series, it's left out a lot.

Though I do agree with the Hunger Games thing. For being a bestselling series, it's left out a lot. I guess i was feeling like i had excess leftover Aggro without a reasonable way to deal with it. One time when it happened, i became a net basher and once beaten off a Net Troll with a virtually giant dictionary full of European Folklore[i had some help in fighting said net troll, though!] Another time when it happened, i was showing excess rage my role-play band tend to have[especially Lancelot Siegfried, as he went axe-crazy!] in a big fight. I'd rather not add more colorful details to the messy rage, but will instead leave a happy note that i'd like to see lady Persephone covered in ribbons! ^_^' I know, and that series isn't the only one getting maddeningly left out of good lists, but its even more obvious than the case of the Camp Half-Blood novels, as if they're targeting more than just Round Table-esque fandom worlds to leave out. I'd like to have both of them on there, by now, along with The Demonata series, by Darren Shan! *Goes to dump head in bucket of cold water as soon as i placed Ear plugs on!* Please hit me with cold water or help me cool down, i don't think i can pull it together like this without weaponizing the excess aggro!

What's MEGAS X.L.R? - Megas XLR
Reviewed by Kevin Pezzano, © 2004 wrote: "What's a Quantum Singularity?" "It's like a Black Hole, but portable. And with a cooler name." -- evil space robot wrestling promoter Magnanimous gives Coop a physics lesson.
The crossover between Japanese and American pop culture may just have reached its pinnacle with this show.
"Megas XLR" is the heartwarming story of a talented young car customizer from New Jersey, his slacker buddy, the giant robot he salvaged from his local junkyard, and the ass-kicking girl who came back from the future to retrieve that robot so it could be used to fight off an alien invasion. Coop, our big-boned blond-goateed hero, is enamored with the idea of owning his very own giant robot (come one, who can blame him). However, the robot itself, Megas, was damaged during its travels through time, so Coop has... spruced it up a bit. It has a snazzy blue paintjob, stylin' flame decals along the side, an eight-ball shifter, and those mudflaps with silhouettes of naked women on them. Oh, and he had to replace the head with a classic convertible car, steering wheel, ten-disc CD changer, pine tree air freshener, and all.
Coop and his buddy Jamie are content to use the tricked-out Megas to terrorize the neighborhood (in a good-natured way, of course) and compete in auto shows (where even giant robots are no match for the bass and amp a good lowrider is equipped with). Kiva, the girl who has come back to the past, though, only wants her giant robot back so she can save the Earth from green tentacled robot-piloting aliens, and she is not pleased at all to be trapped in the past with a couple of primitives like Coop and Jamie (the term "monkey-thing" gets bandied about a lot). It's all she can do to work on repairing the time shunt on the Megas and corral those two ADD slackers long enough to use the Megas to fight off various giant robot and alien attackers, all of whom want the power of the Megas for themselves. In between getting slurpees at the local convenience store, that is.
This series throws the contents of your average Gen-Xer's brain into a blender, adds in some nitrous, spices things with a definite Japanese animation sensibility, and mashes the "puree" button. "Megas XLR" is a madcap mix of pop-culture-fueled antics from around the world, part anime and part "Jay and Silent Bob." It features karaoke sonic weapons, DDR machines used as manual backup controls, the entire bow of the space cruiser Yamato popping from Megas' chest, green-skinned alien catgirls, food courts on the Planet of the Space Amazons, Voltron's blazing sword, the one and only Bruce Campbell guest-starring as a wrestling promoter who's just a giant floating head with little dangly arms and legs (thus bearing a suspicious resemblance to Marvel Comics' oddball villain Modok), and enough "Transformers" riffs to make this particular reviewer's inner fanboy very, very happy.
The best thing about this whole show is the way it takes none of it seriously. It doesn't even take ITSELF seriously. The characters are likeable, but are often the objects of this series' humor as much as the pop-culture references are. Coop is a good-hearted but easily-distracted doofus who'd rather spend his time playing video games or tinkering with old cars than saving the world. Jamie is a self-centered, slightly cowardly slacker who is sort of like Shaggy from "Scooby Doo" crossed with Randall from "Clerks." And Kiva is stuck-up and disdainful of her two erstwhile partners, despite (or maybe because of) being the smartest and most competent member of the trio by far. Their odd character clashes and brief asides (especially Coop's, who often has "Family Guy"-like flashbacks to his many screwups, like putting squeezy cheese into a power coupler that looks an awful lot like the Autobot Matrix of Leadership) help keep "Megas XLR" from being just another lame anime parody, and instead transform it into both a satire and a loving homage to everything that's cool to people of my generation.
Though there have been just three episodes broadcast so far, "Megas XLR" has quickly become a must-see on Saturday nights, even surpassing the much-hyped "Gundam SEED"on Cartoon Network's revamped Toonami block. It's clever, it's funny, it's action-packed, it has Wendee Lee and David Lucas as two of the main characters, and it's just plain messed-up at times.
Other giant robot shows only WISH they could be this cool. I hope that helps and is of use!

| Harry Potter - By the quality of writing and the utter greatness of this series, it tops everything, in my opinion. It's so complex, so amazing and the characters are so brilliant... I don't even have the words that do it justice. It's just perfect for me. It'll always be my all-time favorite. VA - I was surprised by how enchanted I was with it. You all know this, of course, since I wouldn't be here if that wasn't the case. High quality of writing, strong plot and characters, amazingly original with the vampire theme we've all seen a lot. Need I say more? Twilight - Amateurishly yet enthusiastically written, it has the ability to get under your skin even though your mind is telling you how badly it's written. It has a lot of plot holes and characters are not something I would call well-developed - most of them, at least. But, there's something about it that makes you go on reading it and, like I said, it can get under your skin. House of Night - I tried reading the first chapter and I don't want to insult anyone but I found it idiotic. Again, sorry if there are fans around here. It's just not something I could enjoy reading. | |
