I can't get pleasant noises out of reed instruments. I can get okay noises out of double reeds but single reeds are pretty hard for me. I could always buzz brass instrument mouthpieces. My other choice was flute but I couldn't get a sound out of it at all. I can now which makes me happy.

I like the flute, but as a kid I couldn't get my fingers to reach the keys.

I always feel bad for the people who really want to play an instrument but are too small in some way. Like a 5 year old trying to play a full size tuba would be an interesting site to see.

And when they're lugging giant cases all through the school, you want to go over to them and help them walk around. It totally looks like they're going to fall over and be sqwished by their instrument

Yeah! I remember the clarinet players used to brag about how small their clarinets were but the brass got the last laugh because it was faster for us to put our instruments together.

LOL. There's too many parts to a woodwind instrument.

Dropping a woodwind would be really bad. There are so many little pieces to lose or break

I once played a sax at high school that had a whole heap of masking-tape holding it together....you couldn't play any of the high notes because some of the parts necesssary for that sort of thing were covered up....it was pretty funny.

I wish I could have seen that sax. It sounds like something a band director would have to show you and tell you that you need to take good care of your instrument.

I remember back in 5th grade when band was mandatory for everyone, we first were given a chance to try out each instrument. The only instrument I could get a sound out of was trumpet, so I stuck with it. But I wanted to play ALL of the instruments. I used to also be a part of a bell choir which was pretty awesome.

Omg so true!!! The woodwinds thought they were so awesome... until they saw how easy it was to put our instrument together. Razz

Here's a cool video of a handbell choir doing Carol of the Bells

Yeah, it wasn't exactly a pretty sight, but it was still fun Razz

Ash, if we wanted to try out for the band they made us try all the instruments and then pick our favourite 3, and then the band teacher would pick the instrument for you based on your preferences. That way we didn't have 14 trumpet players (our most popular instrument in primary school)

Everyone wanted to play flute or clarinet. We had a very large clarinet section. Not quite so many trumpets. I was one of the few girls in the trumpet section since girls at that age all seem to want to play flute. Razz

the year below mine came through with quite a few clarinets so we did have a large group of them eventually, but the trumpets seems to dominate our band.

We had tons of flutes, clarinets, and trumpets. We only had about 5 girl trumpet players though. We actually had a guy flute player! He switched to trumpet his eighth grade year though.

Was it because of the teasing?

We had a boy flute player as well and he got teased. He turned out to be gay, and I'm not saying that I think male flute players are gay or anything. It just happened to be that way for him.

Yeah. People kept calling him gay and since he was a short dork, he wasn't getting a girlfriend anytime in the near future to prove that he's straight.

We had boy flute players too, but (that I know of) they didn't get teased. We did have one girl who was teased for playing the flute...she was a red-head and we all went to band camp....I think she got used to the teasing though Razz

Exactly, it was exactly like that.
They even printed something along those lines in the school newsletter. They were informing the school that band camp occurred and the passage started off something like "This one time, at band camp...yeah, we all know the line by now...." and then continued. It was sort of hard to resist saying everytime someone mentioned band camp.
