Chapter 7: Planning

The rest of that day was chaos. There were people delivering furniture, and all sorts of other packages. Then, there was the arranging of the furniture, yes, my room was big, but was it big enough to fit all this furniture? I wasn’t sure.
There was nothing for me to do or anyone for me to talk to. Shadow was off in his own world, doing who knows what and Scarlet was off picking out furniture. The only one who wasn’t busy was the one who I wanted to talk to the least at the time.
I mean, she was sure to be ad at me. We’d grown close over my first days here, and now I’d be sharing a room with a new girl. Eventually, I decided to talk to her, to get it over with.
She was sitting on the giant black recliner, drawing in her notebook. “Hey, Sapphire,” I said, sitting on the sofa next to her.
“Hey,” she said, her face serious. I sighed.
“What are you drawing,” I asked.
“You’ll see,” she smiled. The smile confused me greatly. At first, she was serious, and then she was laughing.
“Alright, look.”
The drawing was the most amazing picture I’d ever seen. It was a portrait of me, when I was human. The thing was, the only time she had seen me when I was human, I was practically dead, and after I was healed, I’m not sure if I was actually human, what with being healed by vampires and all. So, she had drawn this blankly, nothing to look off, no memory of me, yet it was drawn with every detail.
She had used oil pastels and maybe even watercolor paint. It looked like a professional artist, that is paid millions of dollars had drawn it. She looked up at me and laughed. I could feel the expression on my face, almost picture it in my head. My eyes would be bulging out of my head, and my mouth gaping open in shock. I calmed myself, finally bringing words to my mouth.
“This is amazing,” I said, looking at Sapphire sincerely. “I mean it. You have some serious talent.” She rolled her eyes, but I could see the hope sparkling in them. “How long did it take you to draw this?” I asked, staring at the drawing.
“I drew it this morning. I didn’t have anything else to do.”
“But how?” I let her assume what I meant. Her eyes were sincere with understanding. “ I never saw you when you were messed up. Sorry for my choice of words, but I didn’t. I saw you as your true self. The beautiful and shining you. It is a part of my gift. When I heal people, I’m almost blind. I have to have someone else tell me what is wrong, or if there is anything wrong at all.
“ I think it’s a bad part of my gift; I can’t see when someone is hurt. I just walk right past them, thinking that they are perfectly normal, but if I knew, I would heal them. I would find some way to do it without them seeing me. I just, I don’t know, can’t see them.
“If someone else was there, yeah, I could help them. They could tell me, but it isn’t the same as seeing it myself. It makes my gift almost useless.” She said, her eyes tearing up. This was the first time I had heard her talk for so long without stopping, besides the story about her father. I guess she saves her words for serious subjects.
“Hey,” I said, putting my hand on her shoulder. Her head was bent, staring at her shoes, so I raised to so I could look at her clearly.
“It’s not useless. You saved my life.”
“But…”
“No. No buts. You are important, you just haven’t discovered the rest of your powers yet. I mean, I don’t even know anything about my power, so you─”
“What power? She asked, cutting me off. Crap. I never even told her about it. I glanced over at her, to see if she had miraculously forgotten about it. She hadn’t; she still looked at me expectantly.
I took a deep breath and told her everything. Well, almost everything. I left out the parts where Bailey and the werewolves were included, since she wasn’t allowed to know about them. Throughout the whole story, she seemed wide-eyed and curious, and for a moment, I was glad that the subject had shifted away from her healing powers. It seems like that is all that happens around here. Random shifts in attention, like we all have a personality disorder or something of the sort. I smiled slightly, and she looked even more curious.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, seeming hurt.
“I don’t know. Like I said before, I wasn’t sure about it. I’m still not sure.” She nodded her head understandingly. “By the way, you aren’t mad at me about the whole Scarlet thing, are you? I mean, there’s nothing to be mad about, but I guess I’ll understand if you are.”
“No, of course I’m not mad at you. It’s just a girl. No biggie.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“So, you want to have another slumber party? We could ask Scarlet and everything. This time, we could go all out. We could go to the store and buy all sorts of snacks. Ooh! We could set up a tent out back and roast marshmallows over a fire. Moon, it’ll be so much fun!”
“Sure, I mean, I don’t know about Scarlet, but if she doesn’t want to go, then we can still do it.”
“Yeah, we could probably get her to come though. We’ll say it is a welcoming party. She couldn’t say no.”
“Right, and you’re sure we can just go to the store?”
“Positive. Why wouldn’t we be able to?”
“I don’t know, it just seemed like we weren’t allowed to leave.”
“Oh. No, we can go whenever we want, as long as we tell someone we are leaving. Heck, we don’t even have to tell them where we are going.
“That’s cool. So, when do you want to leave?”
“Whenever you want.”
“Well, I want to get dressed to go out, first. I know we’re not going anywhere fancy, but I haven’t been out in a while. Besides the woods.”
“Sure, sure. Let’s say we head out in 30 minutes. I’ll be in my room watching T.V. Come get me when you are ready.”
“Alright. See you then.”
She walked off, and I stared after her. Those were the quickest plans I had ever made, and she talks really fast.
I walked to my bathroom smiling, in hopes of a good night. A totally unexpected night. Maybe, I thought, we can invite everyone to the party. The tent part could be just us, but we could make the party more social. Maybe even Shadow would come. My smile grew wider at the thought.
My reflection in the mirror showed that I had been in the woods, so I jumped in the shower. I wouldn’t have much time for anything else if I took too long, so I had to be quick. No relaxing.
I threw the robe that was hanging on the back of the door on and began drying my hair. Fast, like everything had to be. I brushed it fiercely, no time to straighten it. Then, I moved on to make-up, applying two light coats of mascara(who likes clumpy lashes?) and a dark line of black eyeliner just above my bottom lash line. It made my eyes look really wide, and pretty if done right. I tried my best, and with the time I had, it turned out pretty well.
I wanted to put on eyeshadow, the sparkly silver that had somehow gotten from my old house to this one, but I had no time. I know, I wasn’t going on a date or anything, but it never hurts to look nice.
Remembering that I was still in a bathrobe when I had to leave in like 2 minutes, I ran down the hallway and burst into my room. The closet doors flew open before I had time to realize that I had opened them. I grabbed the first things I saw, hoping that they matched. It was a purple and black v-neck shirt and a pair of black skinnies. It was a good enough match, so I grabbed a pair of black ballet flats and got dressed.
Eventually, I walked down the hall to Sapphire’s room. The door was open, and she was about to walk out of it.
“You ready?” I asked, smiling.
“I sure am. I already told Xander and everything.”
“Do you have, you know money?” I asked.
“Well, duh.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Haven’t you noticed? We’re kind of rich. Of course, Alix and Xander don’t see it that way, but I do. After living for so long, I guess your money just builds up.”
“Huh,” I said. I had noticed all of the nice things, I just hadn’t thought of it that way.
“Let’s go,” she said, motioning towards the front door.
“I’m coming,” I said and followed her. We walked around the house where I was surprised to find a giant garage. I swear, there were 10 cars in there. Sapphire pulled a key ring out of her big, black bag. A car beeped somewhere.
It turned out that it was in the front, near the garage door. It was a really good thing because I really didn’t feel like waiting for everyone to back their cars out of the garage, just to get to one in the back. I felt a pang of homesickness somewhere deep inside of me when I saw Sapphire’s car. It was a blue Mustang, just like mine, except mine was sitting in the school parking lot because a couple of evil vampires decided that they wanted to walk to “the mall” and then feast on my blood. Yeah.
“You like?” Sapphire asked when she saw me ogling her car. All I could do was nod.
“I wish I had one,” she said, catching my attention.
“What do you mean? You do have one, it is right here.”
“No, this is yours,” she said, a smile hinting at her lips.
“Are you serious?” I nearly bounced up and down with glee. I realized, with a start, that it was my car. It had the same dream catcher hanging from the rearview mirror and the same little scratch from where I accidentally keyed my own car. “How’d you get it?”
“Vampires have their ways” I smiled and hugged her.
“Can I drive it?
“Of course you can, it’s your car.” She tossed me the keys.
I got in the car and took in the familiar scent of my watermelon perfume. Sapphire got in the passenger side, put her seatbelt on, and I drove off.
“You’re going to need to tell me where to go,” I said once we got to the driveway.
“You just go straight for a little while, and then turn at the first right. It’s right on the corner,” she said, turning the radio on. An electronic style song came on talking about a black dress and tights was playing, but I wasn’t really listening. I wanted to talk about the party.
“So, about the party. Do you think we should invite everyone? The sleepover could be just us girls, if you wanted, but I was thinking if we invited everyone, it’d be more of a party.
“Yeah, sure. They could stay out with us, too. Me, Scarlet, and you could be in one tent, and then whoever else stays could be in their tents.”
“Yeah.” I smiled.
Then I saw a giant shopping center. There was a small gas station, a grocery store, a big mall, and a few other stores. I pulled into the grocery store’s parking lot and turned the car off.

We came back with two carts full of all sorts of party foods.
“I don’t know how we’re fitting all of this in my car,” I said
“It’ll fit,” Sapphire assured and opened the trunk.
We ended up covered in grocery bags; there was nowhere else to put them. We laughed and talked about what we would do at the party the whole way home.
When we walked in the house, we got a few weird looks, but when everyone saw we were carrying grocery bags they walked out to help us.
“What’s all of this for?” Forest asked, while putting away a couple of bags of chips.
“It’s for a party. Don’t put anything away, either,” Sapphire said.
I saw Star smiling. She knew what we were planning. Are you in? I asked in my head. She nodded slightly. Where’s Scarlet? She pointed upstairs. Okay. Thanks. I looked around to see if anyone had seen our mental conversation. Apparently, they hadn’t seen it. They were too engrossed in Sapphire’s invitation to the party. I looked back over at Star. If anyone asks, I’m upstairs. I’ll be right back. After that, I slipped around the corner. Music was pulsing from someone’s room. I guessed it was Shadow’s since everyone else was downstairs, and I didn’t think Alix and Xander were the type to listen to music like that.
I opened my door, and saw that the whole room was rearranged. I’d had it for 2 days and now it was completely different. There were two beds pushed up against the wall, next to each other. My purple one was closet to the door and the other one had a black and red design.
I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. She got to pick out her own furniture, while mine was just whatever. I know, I should be grateful for everything they had given me, but wouldn’t you feel the same way?
I noticed that the closet doors were opened and I heard the clanging of hangars. I walked over and saw Scarlet digging through all of the clothes, crying.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked, sympathetically.
“Nothing. It’s just, no one’s ever been this nice to me before. All this stuff is just so much.”
“I know. I felt the same way. I’ve only been here for a couple of days, so I really know what you mean.”
“Oh man! You just got here, and now I’m busting in here taking up all of your space.”
“No! I asked you to. I figured you wouldn’t want to room with anyone else.”
“I guess so. Thanks,” she said, sniffling.
“So, do you wan to come to a party?”
“What party?” She seemed to perk up a little.
“I don’t know, a welcoming party for this girl I know named Scarlet.”
“Really?” Her eyes were wide.
“Yes. It’ll be fun.”
“Okay, but I look all…gross.”
“Well then, let’s get you cleaned up. Pick out an outfit, and then we’ll got to my, er, our bathroom.”
“Alright,” she said smiling lightly.
She picked up a sparkling red, spaghetti strap dress.
“Um, you might want to pick out something you can wear outdoors,” I said giggling. “Why?” she asked, hanging the dress back up.
“Because, the party’s outside. There’s going to be a fire and a tent and stuff. I guess I forgot to tell you about that.”
“Oh, that’s cool.”
She smiled and picked out a pair of brown short-shorts and a green t-shirt. “That’s better,” I said and grabbed a sweatshirt for later. She would probably need it. I showed her to my bathroom, and left the sweater on the counter.
“Come downstairs when you’re done,” I said, just as she was closing the door. I walked down to Shadow’s room and heard the music blaring. I knocked harder, hoping that he would hear it over his music. He obviously couldn’t, so I had to try something different.
“Shadow! Open up!” I yelled, and could hear myself over the music.
About 2 seconds later, he opened the door. “Can you turn the music down some?” I asked, pointing to the stereo. He walked away, turned the music off, and came back to the door.
“What’s up?” he asked.
“We’re having a party. You want to come?”
“A party, where?”
“Out back. It’s sort of a welcoming party for Scarlet. You should come.”
“Sound like fun. What time did you say it was?”
“There’s no certain time set. It’s sort of like a camp out. There’s going to be a fire and some of us will be sleeping in our tents. Me and Sapphire bought a whole bunch of junk food already.”
“Junk food? Really? That’s a first. Usually, they don’t eat human foods, let alone junk foods.”
“Hmm. It was Sapphire’s idea, so I guess she’ll be eating some of it, and I don’t plan on giving up junk food any time soon.”
“Nice. I’ll come then.” He smiled.
“Cool,” I said, smiling” See you there.”

Chapter 8: Party

I walked outside and saw everyone setting up their tents. Apparently, it wouldn’t be just us girls in our tents. Everyone had seen the opportunity and had taken it.
“Hey, Moon.” Sapphire called from across the yard. She was filling a picnic table with all of the things that we bought earlier. I waved and looked around for Scarlet. She was sitting on the bench, talking to Sapphire. She looked nice. Dressed up, but enough to be uncomfortable outside.
I walked over to them, a smile on my face. I could only hope that it would be a good night, but somehow, I knew it would be.
“Hey girls,” I said, still smiling.
“Hey,” Scarlet said. Sapphire waved enthusiastically.
“Having fun yet?” I asked
“Nothing’s happening yet.” Sapphire said. Scarlet nodded, and took a candy from a glass bowl on the table.
“It will. Just give everyone time to get settled in. once everyone’s got their tents set up, things will get better.”
“Yeah, they’re almost done now.”
“Yup.” I took a few candies, and popped them into my mouth. The girls were looking behind me, and I felt a tap on my shoulder. I spun around and came face to face with Shadow.
“Hey,” he said, smiling
“Hey,” I returned the grin.
“First smile in years,” Sapphire muttered, covering it up with a cough.
He glared at her mockingly. I couldn’t help but grin wider.
“So, are you setting up a tent?” I asked.
“Yup. It’s right over there.” He pointed over to the side of the house where I could see part of a gray tent. Why does he exclude himself from everyone? I thought to myself, feeling sorry for him. “HEY! You’re just like us. Have fun, relax. Everything will be fine.” Is what I desperately wanted to say, but I had a feeling that he wouldn’t like that very much.
“Cool tent,” was all I said.
“Thanks.”
The sky was getting darker, rapidly. The clouds disappeared from the sky as we watched the sun shrink down into the horizon. There was a perfect view from the backyard picnic table, where coincidentally, we sat. There were many different shades of pinks and oranges that lit up the entire sky. Most of us sat there until the sky turned deep blue, and the moon was visible. A few guys went to the forest to get wood for the fire. I had offered to help, but they laughed and walked off, muttering something about ‘guys being stronger than girls’. Whatever. At least I could watch the sunset with my friends. And Shadow.
Could I call him a friend though? Sure, the past few days we’d spent a lot of time together, and it definitely wasn’t romantic or anything. Not in reality, really. I mean, we flirted, but it was just casual, everyday talk. Yeah, I wished it would be more, but it wasn’t.
Wait. Had I really just thought that? Was I actually thinking about Shadow like that? And then I remembered, Star. I glanced over at her, and she quickly dropped her eyes. Great. Now she knew what I barely knew. I would have to restrain my confusing thoughts when around her.
I heard footsteps and hushed voices come fro the woods. My heart raced in anticipation. I wouldn’t be my werewolf friends, would it? I didn’t think that they would have come here and expose themselves after all of that time in secrecy. To my relief, Aiden, Xander, and Forest walked out of the dark forest carrying large piles of firewood.
“Shadow, you think you could get off your butt and help us carry this, you lazy bum?” Aiden asked in his booming voice.
“Good one!” Sapphire yelled, laughing.
“Ha ha ha…” Shadow said in mock laughter as he hopped off the picnic table to help them carry the logs.
My heart nearly jumped fro my chest when he left his place next to me. I think I swallowed it when I saw him tumbling towards the ground.
Laughter filled the yard fro everyone but Shadow and I. He just lay there, silent and still. I wanted to jump up fro my seat and shake him to cal his name, to heal his wound. That would cause a scene, though. And I definitely did not want that. The laughter died off when they saw the expression on my face and how Shadow still lay there, silent. Someone went up to him, to check on him, but I couldn’t see who. All I saw was Shadow.
“Gotcha!” Shadow yelled, and jumped up to a standing position. He was smiling a proud smile, and I was on the verge of tears. He looked around and saw the looks on everyone’s faces. Some were laughing, others annoyed. I though, was embarrassed and he could see it.
His eyes locked with mine, and I ran into the woods. The last thing I wanted to do was embarrass myself, and of course, that’s what I did. I sat down on my usual tree stump and let the tears run freely. Shadow came running after me, his face confused. When he saw me, his face became concerned.
“Moon, look…” He sat down on the huge tree that Bailey had uprooted a few days ago. “ I’m sorry, I didn’t think you would get that upset. I still don’t understand.” He ran his hands through his dark hair and hung his head between his knees. “ I don’t get it. Why’d you act like that?” He looked at me, waiting for an answer.
“I don’t know. I don’t know why. This is all so confusing. I thought that you were hurt, and everyone was laughing. I wanted to help you, so bad, but I don’t know, I didn’t. Then, you were fine and everyone was laughing, while I was almost crying.” The tears continued streaming.
“You were that worried?” Shadow asked. I nodded, slowly. “Why?”
“I don’t know. Everyone was so mean to you. It was funny, the jokes, at first, but then you fell. It was like my life ended.” Had I really just said that aloud?
“It was like…your life ended?” he asked, staring at me. It was like he was seeing into my soul. I nodded and the tears ran faster. He got up quickly and sat down on the little space left of the stump. He wiped my tears with his sleeve.
“Don’t cry. I would’ve felt the same way, ” he whispered. This caught my attention.
“Really?” I asked, sniffling.
“Yes.” His hand swept across my face again. We were so close now. I could feel his breath in my face. Warm and soothing. I sighed.
“What does this all mean?” I asked.
“I don’t know.” He smiled lightly, leaning closer to me. He held me close, and I wanted to cry again. Not because I was embarrassed, but because I was happy.
I rested my head on his shoulder, taking in his woodsy scent. His hair brushed against my cheek, and he gently kissed my forehead. A tingling sensation rushed through me, and I was ecstatic.
“We’re missing the party,” I whispered.
“I know. We can go back in a few minutes. I just want to do something first,” he said in a sweet, light voice. I lifted my head to look at him. I didn’t want him to go anywhere. Couldn’t whatever he had to do wait a few more minutes? My eyes questioned him.
His eyes gleamed in the dark, and he leaned his face closer to mine. It was then that I knew what he wanted to do. He wasn’t going anywhere. He was staying with me, and this couldn’t wait any longer. I knew.
His lips pressed against mine softly. He pulled away, but I stopped him. This time, I kissed him, wrapping my hands around his neck. He seemed surprised, but that didn’t last long. My heart was racing so fast, I thought it was going to burst through my chest.
I didn’t feel the uncomfortable tree stump underneath of me. All I felt was Shadow’s lips on mine, tasting so sweet. It was like he was the only other person in the world. I hadn’t even realized that my feelings for him were this strong. I don’t think I would’ve until then. Until Shadow had acted like he was hurt and I almost lost my mind. Some love story. We broke apart, breathing heavily, but smiling.
“Well, I think that we should get back to the party before they suspect something.”
“Yeah, I guess,” I said, not wanting to leave. “Oh, when you get there, think about something else, besides what just happened.”
“Why?”
“Because Star can read minds. I mean if you want her to know, I guess you can think about it. I don’t think of her as the type to tell anyone.”
“Oh yeah. I forgot about that for a second.”
“It’s kind of hard for me to forget about. Talk about an invasion of privacy. I know she can’t really help it, though,” I said, walking closer to the party. Shadow caught up with me and linked his fingers through mine.
“You just learn to ignore it, after a while.”
“I guess so.”
Just as we walked out of the woods, I dropped his hand. I didn’t want to, but I didn’t wan to tell Sapphire either.
“Hey, they’re back!” Sapphire shouted, obviously trying to make me feel better. I bet that they all had so many different assumptions about why I had run off. Only Star would know the real reason.
They already had the fire started. Everyone was sitting around it in a circle. They had marshmallows roasting on sticks and were telling jokes. Sapphire must’ve been really worried about me, constantly glancing at the woods. Everyone else was totally absorbed in the conversation, so that was the only explanation. Plus, it fit her personality. Hyper and crazy, but supportive and worried in a serious position. This wasn’t anything serious, but she didn’t know that.
Shadow and I took the only open seats left. They were opposite each other. My seat was next to Sapphire.
“Here have a marshmallow.” she said, handing us both one. We both picked up a saved stick from the pile and roasted the marshmallows.
Alix was telling the end of a joke about bananas when I sat down.
“Let’s tell ghost stories,” Xander said and burst into a story about a headless man. I wasn’t paying attention to the tale, I was too fascinated by Shadow. I stared at him, hoping that he would look back at me. Why did I really care if anyone saw us together. Were we together, though? I sighed. The whole night was confusing.
The story Xander was telling was very long. It gave me plenty of time to gaze at Shadow. His skin was brightened by the orange and yellow flames of the fire. His hair was a dark shadow, spilled across his face. I thought back to when his hair was against my face, and smiled.
He looked over at me and smiled, his white teeth gleaming. No one else seemed to notice us, and if they did, they didn’t say anything. I wanted to walk across the fire to where he was sitting and embrace him in a warm hug. I didn’t though.
I would have to wait until another time. Gasps and shrieks filled the backyard. Meaning that the story was coming to an end.
I pulled my eyes of Shadow, and glanced at my flaming marshmallow. Quickly, I blew it out and pulled the charred layer off.
Everyone looked at me and laughed. Heart threw a bag of graham crackers at me, and I grabbed them and put the marshmallow on one, grateful to get the sticky mess off of my fingers. I could feel everyone staring at me, and hear them laughing.
“What?” I asked.
“Want some help?” Sapphire asked, leaning her chair closer to mine. She handed me a napkin and placed a brick of chocolate on mess of a s’more.
“There you go.”
“Thanks.”
Everyone turned away and went back to telling their horror stories. I quickly took a bite, not wanting them to see me make a fool of myself. But of course, Shadow saw me and giggled quietly. I got up, walked over to the snack table and finished my s’more in privacy. I grabbed a paper plate and filled with all sorts of snack foods, and my stomach growled. Good thing Sapphire hadn’t set out any blood. If she had, it would probably be in the cooler where all the drinks were kept. Note to self: Don’t go near the cooler.
I walked slowly back to my chair and saw that Aiden and Star were gone. Probably back to their tents for the night. I gladly took Star’s seat. It was only one seat away from Shadow. Only Xander stood in the way. Scarlet was telling a ghost story that no one had heard before. I was basically drifting in and out of it, sometimes listening, others not.
I didn’t even hear when Xander and Alix left to their tent. I was awakened by a piece of popcorn thrown in my face. Sapphire was giggling and Scarlet was trying not to.
“What was that for?” I asked.
“For zoning out”
“Well, thanks.” I tried to find something small to throw back at her.
“Well, it seems like we’re the only young ones living here. Everyone else’s bedtime was like 4 hours ago.” Sapphire said.
“Nice.”
“They aren’t that old,” Shine said, in her high-pitched voice.
“But they can’t stay up with us,” Sapphire retorted.
“Well, it seems pretty late. I feel like going to bed myself. What about you, Hun?” She looked over at Forest.
“Whatever you want to do,” he said, staring into her eyes.
“Gross guys, can you try to not make us throw up?” Sapphire covered her eyes to show her disgust.
“Whatever, wait until you have a boyfriend.” shine said, and walked off to her tent, Forest at her side.
“I should get some sleep, too.” Heart said, yawning.
“Well, why doesn’t everyone leave and let me sit here by myself?“ Sapphire whined. Heart just laughed, slightly and walked inside. This surprised me. Everyone else was staying outside, with us, in their tents.
“Why did she go inside?” I asked.
“Did you see what she is wearing? She would never sleep outside. That’s like giving a vegetarian a pork chop or giving Shadow blood,” Sapphire said, and nudged Shadow, smiling. No one laughed.
“So, it looks like it’s just the 4 of us.” I said, trying to change the subject.
“Yeah. Is anyone else hungry?” Scarlet asked.
“I am,” Shadow said. My stomach growled. I had barely eaten my plate of food. It was still sitting in my lap, untouched.
“I’ve got some food her. You guys can go get some.” I said.
“I’ll be right back,” Scarlet said and walked off to the table. Sapphire followed after her. I’d expected Shadow to go, too, he had said he was hungry, but he didn’t. Instead, he switched to the chair next to me.
“So…” he said, grabbing a cookie off my plate.
“So…What?” I asked… eating a candy.
“We’re alone.
“Not for long. Sapphire and Scarlet will be back any minute. Besides, I’m so confused, I mean, what do you think about all of this, about us?” I said the last word hesitantly.
“I think that what happens, happens for a reason. I know, things have been crazy lately, but it has a purpose. So, you and me, maybe we’re meant to be.” He brushed a strand of hair off my face. “If it isn’t, it’ll be pretty devastating, but it’ll work out.” Those weren’t the words that I was expecting. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that. My words were stuck in my throat.
“That was very optimistic of you,” I managed to say.
“Well, you know me. You never know what to expect, right? One day he’s angry, the next days he’s…optimistic.” He grinned a giant smile, one that made me want to smile myself.
“Look, I’ve got to say something, or else I’ll never say it.” I took a deep breath. “ I…like you, okay? I really do. I’ve never said that to anyone before, because I’ve never felt this way before. It’s really confusing how I’ve only known you for 3 days and I feel like I’ve known you forever. I understand if you don’t feel the same way, I just had to get all of this off my chest.” I finished talking, breathing slightly heavily.
“Why would I not feel the same way about you? There are no words to explain it. The easiest way to say it is, ‘we’re meant to be.’
I wanted to do so many things, say so many things, but Sapphire and Scarlet walked over. Too soon, if you ask me.
“Ohmygosh, Moon. You pick out amazing cookies.” Sapphire said, taking a bite out of one. Scarlet just nodded, chewing on one herself.
“Why, thank you,” I replied cheerfully. At this point, my life was a rollercoaster. Sometimes I was happy, others not. Right now, I was at the very top of the rollercoaster, the most thrilling part. The bad thing was, anything could push me of, and send me spiraling to unhappiness.
“You seem…happier,” she turned her gaze to Shadow. “What did you do to her?”
“Nothing,” He raised his arms to show his innocence, but his smile gave him away.
“Yeah, sure.” She plopped down into a seat, closer to me and Shadow.
“So, what do we do now?” Scarlet asked, sitting down next to Sapphire.
“We could play truth or dare,” Sapphire said, grinning mischievously.
“Uh, I don’t know…” I said.
“It’ll be fun! Come on guys. You don’t want to be like those oldies, do you?”
“No, but…” I looked at Scarlet and Shadow. They seemed about as interested I was.
“I will, if they will,” I said, knowing we would never hear the end of it if we didn’t play. They sighed.
“Yay! So, who wants to go first?” No one replied. “Okay, I will. Scarlet. Truth or dare?”
“Uh, truth,” she said nervously. I would’ve gone with dare. I couldn’t let anything about me be known. Not this way, at least.
“Okay. How old are you really?”
“I’m 18.”
“Really? Well, you’re almost as young as Moon. Your turn.”
“Okay. Moon.” Oh no. “Truth or Dare?”
“Dare.” Please don’t be anything embarrassing.
“I dare you to… eat that whole cookie in one bite. I looked to see where she was pointing and saw a giant, chocolate chunk, cookie. This’ll be easy.
“Okay.” I picked up the massive cookie and crammed it into my mouth. I chewed once, and a few smaller chews secretly, and then swallowed.
“Woah…” Scarlet said.
“My turn,” I said, and took a big drink of someone’s soda. “Shadow.” My heart fluttered. “ Truth or dare?” He took some time to think about it.
“Dare.” I dare you to kiss me again, was the first thought to pop into my head. I had to think for a while.
“I dare you to dance around the backyard.” His sparkling eyes, darkened a bit. I bet he was hoping for the first thought. But that wouldn’t happen. Not here.
He stood up and started to dance. At first, he did the Macarena. Then, he started doing the chicken dance. Sapphire and Scarlet couldn’t control their laughter. I was giggling, myself.
He came back to his seat, breathless but smiling. WE all clapped at the fun show.
“Hey Moon, truth or dare?” This made me stop laughing. This was the only time ever that I may pick truth. My chances were even. If I picked truth, I might embarrass myself. If I picked Dare, I might embarrass myself. It was a lose-lose situation. I sighed.
