| Odd that this will be the first thread for this board. But Janine strikes me as an interesting character...very much like her daughter but w/o the immaturity. It's probably overdoing it to say that I identify with the working mom in her. I see my kids daily while Janine rarely sees her daughter. But she's clearly well know, well respected, and well feared by Moroi, Strigoi and Dhampir alike.
But to find out that she was emotional and romantic and actually thought Ibrahim would stay with her and not treat her as a fling showed that her approach to life wasn't all training but partially heartbreak too.

| I dunno. I'm not a big fan of Janine. I thought her behaviour in Frostbite at that gala thing that Lissa forced Rose to attend was "too little, too late". She was trying to act like a mom (i.e. pulling Rose away from Adrian), when really, IMO, she had no right. She more or less gave that up when she abandoned Rose to live her own life.
Spoiler for Shadow Kiss (at least I THINK this happens in Shadow Kiss)
When Janine gave Rose that 'eye' pendant thing that was a Middle Eastern talisman for protection...again I felt it was a case of a day late and a dollar short. She seems to value her career and duty and the ever famous "they come first" more than her own flesh and blood. That's just not right.
I mean no disrespect, but I just don't like her. I wish Janine would just f*** off and continue living her own life and just stay away.

| I feel bad for Janine... She obviously felt a call of duty and thought it was best for Rose and her in the long run. I think she did it FOR Rose. (The whole leaving her bit.) She wants Rose to be strong and a good guardian. I think she just has issues showing she cares. I just wonder what she'll think when she finds out about the little romance Rose had with Dimitri. | |

| I don't know why but I like her. Do you think that at twenty years old, you could raise a child after a whole life of training to protect Moroi and kill Strigoi? I know I wouldn't be able.
And also wouldn't her daughter be a constant reminder of the Moroi (um..Ibrahim) that left her? I don't think that Janine could withstand that heartbreak everyday when she was young. I mean she practically became a *blood whore* kinda... I think. I don't know what she would be called. She would have made a poor mother if secretly resented Rose. BUt I think over time, she would have learnt to accept her poor decisions and love Rose fully but she had to mature for that to happen.
I personally think that she did Rose a favor taking all these possible points into consideration. Rose also grew up stronger because of this and truly makes her Rose.
I like Janine and I really want to see a battle where Rose and Janine team up together and fight in a battle. I dunno how the hell that could happen but my imagination runs wild.
I'm out, essa. | |

| In any case, i wonder if anyone has any ladies to consider for playing her, because all i got would be Carla..i think her last name starts with a G, along with Kate Beckinsale and Angelina Jolie, really. I can't pick between the 3, at all! | |

I can't pick between the 3, at all! Carla Gugino!! She'd be awesome!! - greatavatar wrote:

I don't think being reminded of Ibrahim would have mattered. There's a strong bond between a mother and her child. She obviously loves Rose, and has loved her throughout Rose's life. I think it's more that she was young and didn't really get the chance to love Rose and take care of her the way she wanted. She had always been a guardian and with being so young, probably didn't know the first thing about taking care of a child. But Janine must have had some time with Rose before leaving her at St. Vlad's. Anyway, I've always been curious of how they kept in touch during Rose's school career. I'm sure that Janine visited her when she was younger because Rose mentions that it's been a few years since she's seen her.

Good point...although for some reason or another, i seem to imagine Janine, in descriptions, at least, as a mixture between Angelina Jolie, Kate Beckinsale[Kate's also british!], and Carla Gugino, all in one, to me, and i don't even know why, really. As for her daughter, on the other hand...well, they best get an Arabian-Rooted lady to play Rose, and do everything in their power to make sure the lady can at least act her way out of a paper bag, for that matter!

I doubt Janine would have had all that much holiday/visiting time...Once a year at christmas maybe? But even then I doubt it would have been long. I know Rose an had email from her when they got back to the campus in VA, so I guess when computers were around they may have sent a few emails to each other...but my guess is not much contact at all from all that Rose said about her.

| In any case, i don't know how, but of all the potentially mental screw-ups within Vampire Academy, Janine appears to have struck me as awe-inspiring, among the Adults who share the overall common sense of Rose and Company..then again, i'm grateful that Rose and company even managed to successfully help, at all, at making the novels as bearable as they are! It's something the Cullens and the Wolf Pack, COMBINED, failed miserably at doing, in any of the twilight novels after the 1st one.
How did Rose and Company, a band mainly consisting of Mental Screw-ups[no offense intended!] managed to pull it off, again?

| I like that with each book there is a growing bond(or whatever you want to call it) with Janine and Rose.
In the earlier books Rose doesn't have much understanding for her mother's life/feeling, and vice versa. Of course they can't really have that without communication.
Its been a while since I've read the books. Book 2: During that scene where Janine gives Rose her x-mas gift. Rose doesn't understand Janine's facial expression or something. I'm assuming it Janine trying to open up to Rose but Rose wouldn't let her. Book 3: Rose begins to admire Janine. Rose begins to see what he mother's job is and what it takes. Book 4- Blood Promise: It's the most emotion we have seen of Janine. When Rose returns to the Academy Janine is in tears, I think, and Rose realizes that she really missed her mom.

| Why would Janine tell nothing to Rose about her father? She clearly cared for him. | |

I think that idea makes me question if Ancient Spartan Women would tell their children next to nothing about their fathers, other than they were soldiers, Master, if it helps.
