| Part 29 Me and Mel were going to the commons, but today we weren’t met by our “guys”. Instead, Duston was standing before us. “Where’s Sora and Jeremy?” I asked him. He shrugged, “I don’t know,” was all he said. “How can you not know? He’s your brother.” I said, slightly on edge. He just shrugged, not saying anything else. “Ugh!” taking Mel’s hand, I tugged her arm as I walked away, dragging her along with me. When we entered the commons, I froze, gripping Mel’s hand tighter. She didn’t know what I was seeing, but she squeezed back and then let go to let Jeremy take her in an embrace. By the time I had taken a step forward, Duston was right in front of me. “I was going to try and stop you before you realized he was gone…” his words trailed off, I barely made out what he was saying, and it just sounded like a faint humming in my ears. Where was he? What did I do? Did someone find out about him? Had someone threatened him? I shook my head. No, if someone knew about Sora, they would have guessed about Duston as well. But then, something hit me. Well, not something, but someone’s name hit me: James. I scanned the room for him, searching for his familiar features. And then, I saw him, with the same group of people he was grouped with the other day in combat class. I walked toward him, ignoring Duston, only vaguely aware of him following behind me. When I reached James, I tapped him on the shoulder. He turned to me, smiling. Taking in how I looked, his smile slowly faded, “What’s wrong?” he asked, sounding like he didn’t know what was up. “Like you don’t know? Where is he? Where is Sora? Answer me, James.” I had my hands clenched into fists at my side, ready to punch him if he turned arrogant. “Raven, what are you talking about? Aren’t you normally with him? He’s your boyfriend,” he said the word like it was something dirty, I scowled. “Don’t play coy with me. Now stop the bullshit and tell me where he is.” James was sitting, but I guess I got him angry, because one second I was staring down at him, and the next, he was staring down at me. “I. Don’t. Know.” He said each word slow and distinct, like he was telling a child for the thirtieth time. “Then…where is he…” my voice trailed off, sounding pained and trembled. He shook his head and his lips shaped words, but I couldn’t hear anything. My world was spinning. Every face I saw in the commons were a blur, there was only a faint hum of voices. The last thing I saw was the room tipping to one side, and then Duston and James’ faces looking worried and saying something I couldn’t understand. Then, all I saw was blackness, nothing more, nothing less. All there was around me was black, damp and cold.
I don’t know what happened, but when I opened my eyes, I was in a room with awful green floral wallpaper and a very eager Claude saying my name. “Raven? Raven! You’re awake,” he sighed and smiled slightly. I tried to sit up, but then the room spun and my head landed back onto a pillow. “What happened? Where am I? Why are you here?” my thoughts were spinning and before I could think of anything even slightly coherent, it just slipped away. “You fainted; you’re in the hospital on campus. I came to check on you. You’ve been out for three days. The doctors struggled with getting nutrition into you by the use of tubes and needles there.” His gaze flickered to the side of the bed that I lay on. I turned my head and groaned at both the pain that shot through me, and the medical setup that I was in. So that’s the beeping sound I kept hearing, I thought. Claude quickly got up, standing beside me. “Are you in pain? Does anything hurt?” “Yeah, my head feels like it’s splitting in half.” Claude chuckled, “I assumed as much. Duston and James said when you fainted; you hit your head pretty hard on the tiled floor.” I took a breather, steadying myself. Staring at the ceiling, suddenly, all the events came back in a rush, making my head throb even harder. “Sora,” I breathed, my voice sounded like it caressed his name. “Did you find him?” I turned to face Claude. “Is he back yet?” Claude didn’t have to answer me, the look of sorrow and dejection told me all I need to know. I thrashed in the bed, getting up, ignoring the dizzy feeling that fell over me. I ripped away the needles from my body, hopping off the bed, stumbling into Claude’s arms. “Stop this, Raven. You need to rest. Lie back down. Don’t do anything stupid and reckless.” I shook my head and pushed him away from me, swaying slightly. The adrenaline coursing through me helped repress the dizziness just enough to get my balance in check. With one last glance at Claude, I quickly ducked out of the room, running through the double doors, into the reception area, turning to get to the front doors. It only took my a minute or so to get out of there, it was going to take me at least another ten to run to my dorm room. I couldn’t just stay here. No, I needed to find Sora. And if no one would help me, so be it, I’ll do it on me own.

| Part 30 I stopped just before I collided with Mel. She looked surprised, then worried and I felt a little tickle one second and then it faded, sorrow replacing her surprise at me being awake. “Why are you leaving? You can’t just go on your own.” Mel’s voice cracked a little, and I swallowed hard trying to clear the lump in my throat. “I won’t be going alone; I assume Duston will follow me…maybe. I don’t know, yeah, maybe I’ll go alone.” I shrugged, hoping she wouldn’t see through my façade. I was scared, eager, sad, astonished and overwhelmed by what I was about to do. Mel shook her head, “You are not about to go alone out there. If you’re going, I’m going.” I shook my head vehemently, “No you are not, and you are staying here with the protectors on campus. I am not about to risk your life with mine already on the line, trying to find someone I love.” I exclaimed. I did not need this right now. She could not go with me. There was so much at stake here. My life, Sora’s…we were tangled in a way I couldn’t explain. Though he wasn’t here, I felt his presence lingering everywhere. He was alive, somewhere, he was alive. I just needed to find him and ask why he had left in the first place. Mel looked at me, torn. So many emotions flitted across her features: pain, loss, hurt…more pain. I realized something in that second, she really was worried of and for me. She wanted me to be safe, and she wanted to go with me to make sure that I was. “Please…” she pleaded. “Please let me come with you…” I exhaled, slightly irritated. This could not be happening! “No, Mel. You need to stay here, I need to make sure you’ll be out of danger, and that your life won’t be in my hands…yet. I’ll text you. I’ll text and say if I’m okay. I’ll call if I think it’s safe, okay? So please, don’t do this right now.” My voice cracked a lot while I was saying this to Mel. She had to know that I was doing this to keep her safe. After pondering my words for an agonizing minute, she finally nodded, “Okay…but I’m going to get Duston and tell him to meet you outside of our room” I sighed, but nodded; anything to get her out of here so I can quickly grab a few things. After she left, I went into our room, grabbed a medium sized gym back, packed a few things I knew I’d need, and some things that were something I wanted to take. I packed at least seven pairs of clothes along with other things I thought were essential. I made sure to pack my laptop and charger, especially my phone charger. I didn’t know how long I’d be gone, but I knew I’d need to leave…and soon. Opening the door, Duston was already waiting for me, leaning against the wall opposite of my door. He looked…eager, at ease…calm. Well, at least one of us was. Walking to my right—the side closest to the stairs—he grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop. I turned back to him. “What?” I asked, sort of annoyed with how much time we were wasting. “Look, this isn’t something you want to do. He left because of our parents. That’s where he is. That’s why he isn’t here.” I stared at him, gaping. “What?! Why? How?” he shrugged. “Karyn talked to both of us, but Sora said he’d go. Told me to keep an eye on you. Said you might do something like this.” I shook my head. What he was saying…it’s illogical. Why would he leave to see his family? I shuddered; wondering what would happen if I showed up. I shrugged Duston’s hand off me. “I don’t care where he is or who he’s with. I’m going to find him, and I’m going whether you help me or not.” I turned and jogged over to the stairs. As quickly as I could, I reached the side doors that led outside. I pushed past the doors and the cool air was a relief to feel. Only made me believe even more that I was awake, and what I was about to do. Duston caught up to me, eventually. We were practically running to one of the walls that didn’t have a gate with protectors watching it. Duston went over the wall first, it was about fifteen feet high, but it was easy to scale. He dropped down first, to talk on the full impact of the drop. I went after, and he caught me, just before I got myself seriously hurt. Duston and I left campus ground on foot. By the time we were a safe distance away…Duston changed. I was astonished. He got down low, as if he wanted me to climb on him. I stared. He looked back and jerked his head a little. Quickly, I climbed on his back, trying not to fall. Grasping handfuls of his hair, he got up, and ran. | |

| Part 31 I didn’t know where we were, but the night air was starting to feel chilly. I started cuddling into the fur at Duston’s neck. He was warm, and it seemed slightly impossible to me that I was riding a werewolf. Not just any werewolf, Sora’s brother, Duston. About seven hours had passed, but no one came looking for us. We were either too far away, or no one had realized we’d left. Duston was pretty fast while he was a werewolf, really warm too. His coat was odd. It was soft and silky smooth—like Sora’s—but the color was off. While Sora’s was close to pitch black, Duston’s was more of a dark brown. The strides Duston took were lengthy, but he seemed to glide smoothly through the brush of wilderness that surrounded us. Slowly, I started fading. Duston’s heart beat, his panting, the rush of wind that passed by; all of this was able to lull me to sleep.
“Finally,” I heard a girls’ voice say. “I was worried that you weren’t going to sleep.” I looked at my surrounding and found myself in my room. But Mel wasn’t on her side, someone else was: Karyn. “Oh my gosh, you came into another one of my dreams!” I wasn’t upset or angry. No, I was elated. I ran to her and hugged her, quickly letting go. “How are you?” She shrugged, “Okay, I guess. Things are sort of…chaotic…” she hesitated slightly on the last word. Then, I remembered how I’d fallen asleep. “Where’s Sora? How is he? He isn’t hurt, is he?” for a second, I felt fear creep into me. Fear for Sora. Fear that I’d never see him again…fear that Sora was gone, completely. She shook her head, “No, he’s sleeping upstairs in his room. Hold on,” she closed her eyes, concentrating on something. At first, I didn’t understand what she was doing. Suddenly, Sora was at the door of the room, looking at Karyn as if he already knew this would happen. I stared at him, gaping. Sora was here. Now I knew what Karyn was doing. She was reaching out to her brother’s dream, and changed it so he’d be with us. I took in the sight of him, his hair, the black jeans he wore, the purple shirt that seemed to fit him perfectly. I was dazed, drinking in his features. As if he just now realized it, he turned to me and I gasped. His eyes hadn’t changed at all. Those deep, crystal blue eyes stared at me, like he gazed through my being, staring straight at my soul. He smiled, walking toward me. When he was only a few inches in front of my, I cracked. I clutched at his shirt, burying my face in his chest letting the tears flow. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tightly against his chest. “Shh…I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, but when Karyn told me they were going to track me down, well…I couldn’t let that happen. If they found me at the academy, things were bound to turn bloody.” He started stroking my hair and tightened his hold on me when I shuddered. “Who’s they?” I asked, looking up at him. He grimaced only slightly, but then he turned a little gentle again. “Our parents.” he shrugged, “they were going to get a few packs to help them track me down. I thought, since Duston found me, I couldn’t risk letting a horde of werewolves infiltrate the academy. That’d be terrible.” He shook his head and sighed, wiping away a tear that fell. “But it’s alright now. I explained a little to my parents, but not the whole story.” “More like lied to them.” Karyn pitched in, rolling her eyes. Sora glanced at her, clearly annoyed, but turned back to me, his features gentle. “Okay, I told them I was ‘surveying’ an academy and that I wanted to get on the inside to…” he looked at me, utterly serious, and tensed up a little, “to take it down…” he explained. I gasped, and slowly, the feelings of love and passion that once flowed through me turned to horror. I pushed against his chest and tried to get away. Wake up, come on. Wake up, get out of here. I thought. But…I couldn’t wake up. I was probably too tired to. Sora quickly pulled me back to him, the arms that were just comforting me turned into restraints. He wasn’t trying to hurt me, just trying to keep me near and have my attention. “Didn’t you hear Karyn? That was the ‘lie’ I told them. The real reason I went to that academy,” his hold on me loosened, turning gentle once more, “was because I saw a girl, walking around in the dark, and wanted to touch me while I was a wolf.” He smiled lightly and pressed his lips to my forehead.

| Part32 I closed my eyes momentarily and then tilted my head up to kiss him. I missed him so much, even in a dream, it felt real. At first, it was soft and gentle, but as the yearning in us picked up, well…so did the kiss. I jumped a little when his hands were on my hips, pulling me closer to him. A soft sound escaped my lips and my hand sought out his hair, tangling itself in the silky feel of it. “Ahem,” Karyn cleared her throat, trying to get our attention. I flushed and pulled away from Sora, but leaned against his chest. My body purred for him, every little touch made my skin tingle. “Umm, well, I’ll leave you two alone in here. Bye Raven, I’ll see you later.” She smiled, giving me a knowing glance before walking out the door, closing it behind her. Sora looked down at me, with a smile that made my heart flutter. I stared at his chest instead, placing a palm where I could feel his heart beat. We were so close; I could feel him shudder at my touch. “So, how’s everyone back there? Are Mel and Jeremy doing alright?” he asked me, bringing my attention back to real life—even if we were in a dream. “Oh, umm…I-I think Mel is okay. I don’t really know about Jeremy, but I’m sure he’s fine.” I stammered a little, not wanting to talk about what Duston and me had recently done. “Raven…what aren’t you telling me?” he asked, looking down at me. I looked away, refusing to let him get what would surely make him upset. He sighed in what sounded like annoyance and tilted my chin up to look at him. My lip quivered, and I quickly closed my eyes, not wanting his gaze to phase me. I felt as he pushed me, back-down, on my bed—which we were standing right on the side of it. I opened my eyes just in time to see him hovering over me. “What are you doing?” I asked, only just slightly panicked. He smiled, his hands seeking out my wrists, holding me down to my bed. I struggled slightly, but his hold tightened and I felt dizzy. His lips came down on mine, fierce, strong and hungry. I responded almost instantly, ceasing my struggles, arching upward to be closer to him. He groaned and pressed closer to me. My head swam as every touch made my body tingle. I reached out for him, wrapping my arms around his neck. Quickly—so, so quickly—he jerked away from me a little so that he was hovering over me again, not letting our bodies touch. I cried out for him, clutching his shirt, lightly pulling it down toward me. He shook his head, taking my hand, loosening it from the hold I had on his shirt. I sighed and tried to relax, slowing my breathing. He smiled and kissed my cheek. “So, what are you not telling me? And believe me, I’m pretty sure I can get you to talk,” he winked and I flushed a little. I gave in, looking up at him. “I’m…I’m not at the academy…” my voice trailed off as his body turned rigid and tense. “What? Where are you?” he was shaking slightly. Knew I shouldn’t have said anything. “I-I’m not sure.” I stuttered. “We left the academy a few hours ago. I’m not sure how long I’ve been asleep though…” “Who’s ‘we’? Who else is with you, Raven?” he sounded…slightly angry, worried, eager? I couldn’t tell, but I knew he was agitated. “I’m with Duston. I don’t know where he’s taking me, but I got tired even though he’s doing all the running. I just sort of…fell asleep…” he exhaled, not in relief, more like annoyance and impatience. “You’re with Duston?...” that did it, he snapped. What little control he had vanished, and he was really upset. | |

| Part33 Sora got a little ticked off. He started pacing in the room, talking to himself in a slightly annoyed tone. Finally, I got sick of seeing him pacing and put a hand on his shoulder. Stopping, he turned to me. “Sora, look. I’m okay, and I’m asleep. Hopefully Duston took us somewhere safe for the night. When we left, it was around midnight.” I said, calmly, hoping he’d soften a little. He did. Of course, “midnight” is actually midday because of the nocturnal schedule the academy is on. He cupped my face in his hand, staring into my eyes. “I’m just seriously not happy about you coming here. It’s not going to be safe for you.” His eyes shimmered, and I had to take a breath to steady myself. “Okay, well…I don’t know exactly where we are.” He shook his head and opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, I woke up.
I awoke to seeing the brush of greenery that surrounded me, with a hot sun at my back. With a start, I realized I was still on Duston’s…shoulders? I don’t know, but it took me one second to take that in, and then another to quickly grab handfuls of Duston’s fur to cling to him. He was slowing down, whether from fatigue—which is understandable, since he was running all night long—or the near proximity to our destination, I didn’t know. But as I concentrated on listening outward, I heard the faint sounds of cars passing nearby. I tensed a little; not wanting to imagine what would happen if people saw a werewolf with a girl riding it. After a few minutes, Duston stopped and got down, close to the ground. I got what he meant. As agilely as I possibly could, I got off him—my bag clinging to my torso—and stared at him. He made a whining sound that sounded somewhat like…pleading. Cautiously, I turned around and walked behind a nearby tree that kept us both out of each other’s sight. Listening tentatively, I could hear a very faint rustling sound, and something that sort of rang and shimmered. He was shifting back to his human form, I realized. A second or so passed, and I heard footsteps coming toward me from behind the tree. When he stepped from behind the tree, he was wearing the same clothes he had on before we left the academy. It looked wrinkled, his hair was a wild mess, his eyes seemed tired, but alert and he seemed to be slightly more graceful now than when we were at the academy. He checked me out, making sure I wasn’t hurt I guessed. I was starting to get uneasy because I still didn’t know what we were going to do or where we were, for that matter. “Umm…Duston…?” I asked, hesitantly. I didn’t know how brazen he could be after only a short while after phasing back to normal—as in his human form. “Yeah?” he didn’t look back at me, but was staring off to the side where I heard the sounds of cars going by. “Where are we? Not that I don’t trust your ‘canine’ instincts or anything. It’s just that…shouldn’t I know where we are too?” I was on edge. I needed to know where we were, where we were going and who we’d come across. “We’re in Tennessee.” I gasped, shocked. He ran from the middle-of-nowhere Texas, all the way to Tennessee?! “You ran all the way down here? Why!?” “Because this was the farthest I could run, away from the academy.” He seemed calm. Like he knew what he was doing. “Umm…are we staying here, or are we going somewhere else?” I asked, wanting more details. “We’re going to Romania,” he started walking towards the sounds of city life, leaving me by the tree. I hurried after him, not wanting to be left behind. “How are we going to get there, genius?” I was starting to get a little uncomfortable with the situation I had gotten myself into. I really hope he isn’t trying to kidnap me. I thought. “Fly, of course.” He rolled his eyes at me, but continued walking. “I have a friend here that can forge passports and ID’s; we’re going to need them.” Nice going, Raven. You really got yourself into one of the worst situations possible.

| Part 34 Okay, so…the last twelve hours was like Hell. Luckily for me, Dustin’s “friend,” was actually human. He was pretty nice, but I didn’t like the accommodations he was in. all things considered, at least he was dressed pretty well. It was going to be a long flight to Romania, so I figured I’d take a nap. Thinking of Sora and everything we’ve been through recently…actually got me to sleep quicker than I thought possible.
“Hey there sleepy head,” said a familiar voice that made my heart flutter. Turning around, I gasped lightly at who I saw standing in front of me: Sora. “Sora!” I exclaimed and ran into his arms, resting my head against his chest. Chuckling, he whispered, “Sorry I’m late. What did I miss?” and kissed the top of my head. “Nothing much. Dustin just got us on a flight and we’re going to Romania.” I said, looking up at him. Being in his arms, close against his chest…I was able to feel as the muscles under my palms tensed. “You’re coming here…” he whispered, and something close to a growl came from his lips. His arms around me tightened and I whimpered lightly. He looked down at me and slowly released me, stepping back. “What’s wrong, Sora?” my voice broke on his name, something in my chest tightened and I felt an ache in me. Sora started pacing and talking to himself. He glanced at me a few times and came up to me, staring into my eyes. It scared me. But then, the room we were in started to fade. Sora was going to disappear. Karyn was being woken so she couldn’t stabilize the dream for us. With one last sad look on his face, he came to me and held me close to him and kissed my forehead. As the dream faded, we stayed like that until my dream was just a room where I couldn’t see anything but darkness…
It felt like only minutes had passed when I awoke, but really, it had been hours. Dustin woke me up and we took a cab for about an hour. It was dark out, and I was still exhausted. We walked into the woods, and Dustin changed again and he let me ride him again. As he started running, the world around us blurring slightly, I got carried away by sleep again. This time though, it didn’t feel warm and fuzzy. This time, when sleep overcame me, it was dark, empty and cold. I shudder rippled through me, but I still drifted off into a blank dream. Suddenly, a piercing howl cut through the silence and Dustin was still running, except…he was pushing himself faster. I clenched my hands around his fur, trying to stay on him and not fall. The terrain had changed to a rough and unleveled path, the full moon was hiding behind gray clouds, and the night air had become so cold, I couldn’t stop shivering. When Dustin broke through to a clearing, that’s when I understood what was happening. Even slightly disoriented, I knew where we were. The eight wolves flanking two of the ones who stood facing me and Dustin about fifty yards away…were his parents. I scanned the other wolves, searching for that deep midnight coat and hypnotic blue eyes that Sora had. After searching for him without any success, my hope faltered. Something in my chest clenched and I could hardly breathe. Sora was nowhere to be found, there were ten wolves standing before me and Dustin, and I wasn’t strong enough to take on all these wolves, let alone one of them. A surge of fear swept through me as I stared at the growling and tensed postures of all the werewolves. The last thing I heard, was the tearing of the earth beneath the wolves’ paws as they ran towards me and Dustin…
