Tash, here's mine...... Hope you like it as much as Ash does.... lol
Prologue
Looking up, I saw his emerald eyes staring at me intensely, as though they were trying to see into my soul. Catching my gaze he made no move to look down, he didn’t seem embarrassed at all that I had caught him staring. This unnerved me, but at the same time, I found it attractive. He was bold, I liked that.
Chapter One
New school, new people, more stares. Wonderful. At my locker I quickly entered my combination and hurriedly got my stuff for my second period class, Language Arts. I had just walked into the class room and I could already feel the stares of the twenty something people in the room. “Elizabeth Dominique?” the teacher asked as I slowly went over to her desk.
Nodding, I handed him my tardy slip and made my way over to the only empty desk in the back. As I neared the chair my skin started to prickle and my muscles tensed, ready to attack at a moments notice. Sitting down I quietly took no notice of the stranger’s vampiric aura and took out my books. “Am I dead?” the stranger whispered in my ear.
“Not unless I catch you after school and there are no witnesses. Why, do you want your life to end?” I asked in a whispered tone similar to his.
“What you don’t recognize me? I’m insulted. Your family’s only been hunting me for about a hundred years or so,” the voice replied. Turning I instantly recognized him, he was Zachary Stone. The urge to kill him was even stronger than before but I couldn’t, not now, in front of all these people. I hate school!
“Zachary Stone.” I acknowledged him now, hatred quite clear in my voice.
“There’s the Liz we know and love,” Zachary said boldly. “So do you want to go outside and settle this now or wait till later?”
“I’d love to do it now but how am I going to find out where Ryan Slater is before you die? I’m after him too you know.”
“Good luck with that.” Zachary said, turning back to his book.
“You need the luck, not me.”
“I disagree considering you’ve found me three times but yet I’m still living what you call a life.”
“Elizabeth, Zach, stop talking or you might see me in detention,” the language teacher, Mr. what’s-his-face, yelled back to us. Turning back to my work I tried to control the growing urge to torture Zachary right then and there. Not to long after, the bell rang freeing me from any further obligation to stay in the class, fighting the urge to kill and torture the vampire I was forced to sit next to.
My next class was Gym. I prayed to my Goddess that I didn’t have this class with Zachary but unfortunately my prayers were disregarded for the moment. I would make it a point to settle the score with Zachary later, when there were no witnesses or anything that could stop me. “Hello again, enjoying your day?” Zachary asked politely, with a little more boldness than before.
“No, it’s getting worse by the second. You don’t happen to have Ms. Langely for homeroom do you?” I asked, dreading his answer.
“Ummm….. Yea.” He replied, smiling widely.
“My day just got so much worse now that I know that. Why? Why me?”
“Because of fate I guess,” Zachary smirked, walking off quietly before the gym teacher could reach me.
“Well fate can go to hell,” I muttered.
“My name is Mrs. Liza, we’re playing soccer today. Go dress out, Zachary will be your partner.” Internally I groaned and saw him smirk at me all the way across the room.
“This should be interesting,” one guy muttered.
“Not really, she’s gonna get stomped. Zach has unparallel reflexes, you can’t get the ball from him,” the other muttered back. Feeling a smile creep onto my face, I devised a plan to take out my anger and fury in a game of soccer against my worst enemy, just to show them all.
Going into the locker room I changed into my shorts and a light blue tank. While lacing up my Nikes I could hear the other girls whispering across the room. It seemed I was the first person Zachary had ever spoken to and the first girl he’s ever taken an interest in. They seemed jealous; they envied me while I loathed every ounce of attention I got from the vampire. Lovely, my first day of school and I’m already the object of attention and hatred… This school was bound to change my life more drastically than any school has ever done before. Like I said, lovely… Before I could make any more enemies without trying, I walked out of the locker room and strode into the gym, really looking forward to kicking Zachary’s ass in a game of soccer just to show everybody that he’s not as good as they thought he was.
“Zachary, Elizabeth, you’re up first.” Mrs. Liza instructed, waving us out onto the floor and setting up the court for a game of one-on-one.
“Like I said, she’s gonna get stomped,” some guy muttered again. Apparently they were taking bets, this should get interesting.
Stepping up to the ball, Zachary smirked wider. “This should be challenging,” he whispered where only I could hear it.
“Indeed leech,” I replied, seizing the ball once Mrs. Liza blew the whistle. I could hear the wind whistling behind me, I was about half way to his goal before he caught up to me. “Finally, some sort of challenge even if it is weak like you,” I taunted. I wanted him to actually play me so I could take more pride when I won.
“Weak! Ha!” With expert skill, Zachary maneuvered the ball away from me and started down the floor in the opposite direction, no way was I letting him get any where near my goal. Taking the opportunity I seized the ball when he was lining up the shot and quickly headed in the other direction. Effortlessly I kicked the ball into the net before he could even realize what was happening. I heard several shocked gasps, from what I understood I was the first person to ever make a goal against Zachary, making it that much sweeter. “First to five points wins?” I asked, knowing the game would be longer if we went to the designated game of twenty goals.
“Why not?” Zachary taunted me, snagging the ball from the net and taking off; in a flash I was after him. Not long before he lined up a shot I blocked it and sailed down to the other end, making another beautiful shot. The score was now two to zero. Ah, sweet victory was near.
“My turn,” he said, once again sailing in the other direction.
“Nope,” I said, snagging the ball again and making another effortless shot. My anger was turning into elation as my victory deepened. My disappointment seeped through a little though, he really was no challenge. As if reading my mind his plays got harder and harder for me to block and the score was finally four to four. “You ready leech?” I asked, skillfully maneuvering the ball out of the net and down the floor.
“Of course I am hunter.” Before he could do anything I picked up my speed and kicked the ball so hard you could hear it slicing through the air, landing in the net with a satisfying thunk as the net slid back into the wall.
“And victory is mine,” I gloated, jogging to grab the ball and hand it back to the astonished Mrs. Liza. “Can I go get dressed now?” I asked, impatient to get away from the stares I had attracted. So much for my staying unnoticed plan, now I’ll be the talk of the school by fourth period, if I already wasn’t. Speechless, she nodded. Jogging, I ran back to the locker room and changed into my nice, snug light blue jeans, and my tight black tee. Pulling my glossy black hair out of the pony tail I put in, I raked a brush through it, letting it fall loosely around my face.
Looking in the mirror I applied a thin layer of sheer lip gloss. Actually looking at my reflection I knew I was overdoing it, I would be the temptress of every guy in this school by lunch. I know I wanted no attention but I figured since that was already blown why not go over the top. If the populars were jealous of me then I would be invited to be one of them or shunned, either way I’d find out the inner workings of this school. Grabbing my bag I went to go sit on the bleachers and watch the rest of the boring game that was now taking place on the pitiful excuse for a gym floor.
“Hey, good game,” one of the guys I heard talking earlier came up to me and said. “I’m Justin Malbry and this is Sam Hafener.” Looking up I could see them both looking me up and down, in the corner of my eye I saw Zachary smile a little and shake his head. I knew he could see what I was trying to do.
“Elizabeth Dominique,” I introduced myself.
“So, do you play often?” Sam asked sitting next to me. Justin followed his lead and sat on the bleacher below me.
“Not really, I used to but I just never really had much of a challenge, I’m not one for easy kills,” I told them knowing Zachary was still listening. Hopefully he would take the hint that I was still going to kill him, sooner or later. Hopefully sooner……
“I understand, Zach is a hard guy to beat, if you want any harder you’re out of luck,” Justin told me. “Can you give me some pointers?” Typical, I thought, but I don’t think I’m going to take the bait this time.
“Ummmm…… I’m kind of busy settling into my new house. Rain check?” I asked.
“Sure,” Justin replied smiling.
“Justin! Sam! Get over here,” one of the girls from the locker room yelled.
“You’re being summoned,” I told them smiling coyly. “Go, you’ll see me later,” I told them, grabbing my stuff and walking off as the bell rang. “After all, I’m no dream,” I whispered silently. Luckily third period was biology, my favorite class. Unfortunately, I was now the object of stares and whispers and smirks. Seems I was wrong, fourth period was much too late for everyone to know, they already knew and it was the beginning of third period, wonderful. I guess I need to get used to it.
Dumping my biology stuff on the desk I got out a notebook and started doodling. “Elizabeth?” a familiar voice asked. Looking up I saw the object of my hatred for the past 300 hundred years. Wonderful, two vampires I’ve been hunting and am not aloud to kill. I’ll say this again, I HATE school.
“Ryan Slater,” I hissed.
“I hear you’ve seen Zach?”
“Unfortunately, he’s not dead yet if that’s what you’re wondering, but you both will be,” I told him.
Smiling, Ryan shook his head. “Such hostility. I wonder where you get that from, is she still alive?” He asked, referring to my mother.
“Unfortunately for you, yes and she wants her vengeance as much as I do,” I told him, daring him with my eyes to sit down next to me. As if responding to my silent dare, he did and then the teacher walked in. It took all of my concentration to keep from grabbing my knife from my belt and running Ryan through right then in there. The want was so strong it was actually causing me physical pain because I was digging my nails into my palms.
“Do you really want to kill me that badly?” Ryan asked seeing my pain. Giving him a glare I looked away. “Would it make it easier if I let you?” He whispered quietly so the teacher wouldn’t hear us.
“Where’s the challenge in that?” I asked.
“Don’t press any harder if you’d like to keep this away from human attention,” Ryan warned. Apparently I was about to start bleeding, ignoring him, I pressed harder. Removing my nails I felt a warm stream of blood trickle down my hand. Gasping, I glanced towards Ryan who immediately stiffened and stopped breathing. I knew it was too late by how rigid he was sitting and the blackness taking over his eyes. Shit. I had no way to control the bleeding.
Chapter 2
“Not surprising, vampire hunters never listen even when it means secrecy is at stake,” Ryan mumbled. Stopping his breath once again, Ryan leaned over to my side of the desk and broke the desk so that a sharp edge was sticking out. “Rake your hand over it and make the blood flow worse. You have my word I won’t attack you and you just might get some pleasure out of my pain that your causing.”
Nodding, I did as the leech said, watching him grow rigid. Pain seared through my palm and out of habit I ignored it. Raking my palm across the edge once again I cursed just loud enough to be heard. “Ms. Dominique, is something wrong?” Mrs. Lucas asked politely. Pushing aside my pride I nodded.
“I cut my hand on the desk and I can’t stop the bleeding.”
Hurrying over with a first aid kit, she grabbed a hold of my hand. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Ryan grimace at the scent of fresh blood in the air. Inside I smiled a little for his pain but in truth I wanted her to bandage my hand as badly as he did, I could see his self control slipping with each second ticking by. To be honest I was a little scared of what would’ve happened if he had lost control. I knew it was taking a lot of self pressure for him to not to pounce on me right then and there in a classroom full of what I considered children. “I’m sorry,” I told Ryan when Mrs. Lucas left. “I didn’t mean to cause that pain in a classroom full of humans. Too much risk.”
“Maybe you didn’t mean to cause pain here in risk of a human life but you did mean to cause pain.” Ryan replied kind of coldly. “You’re a hunter, I know your methods. I’ve experienced them.” Finally the bell rang, releasing us from anymore misguided attempts at being civil.
Any attempts at friendship shall not be permitted. If in any situation requires that you can not kill the vampire on sight than be as civil to them as need be. Friendship with a vampire is considered high treason and is punishable by death and or the stripping of your powers and or title.
I could quote the laws of the Vampire Hunters that were drilled into me form age three, forwards and backwards. That part happened to stick out the most at the present time. I had to remember, he IS my enemy. Both him and Zachary killed Sarah, my ancestor.
Gathering my stuff, I looked at my schedule to see what my next class was. 5th hour: Calculus, I prayed to my Goddess again that neither Ryan nor Zachary were in my class. When I got to the door I found that my quick prayer had been answered. Thank you Goddess! The assignment given was already covered at my old school so I got it done quickly enough. After submitting it to the teacher I asked to go to the Music room and to my surprise he agreed.
Putting my stuff in my locker, I quickly got excited. I would finally be able to free myself from distraction for at least an hour. Opening the door I saw I was wrong. Catching Zachary’s eye, I narrowed my eyes into slits. Through those slits I saw Zachary jerk his head slightly to the left of him. Turning my head I saw Ryan. Lovely….. Just lovely…..
Ignoring Zachary’s slight nod of acknowledgement, I went over to the opposite side of the room and stood there. Not long after I came in someone handed Zachary a guitar. After getting comfortable he started playing a soft and smooth introduction. I recognized it instantaneously, he sang it at a bar at Barcelona, Spain. It was about a girl he was infatuated with at the time. She was a hooker of sorts, selling her body for money.
Somehow he drew the conclusion that by selling her body she was slowly selling her soul. In his mind he tried to save her, I moved in before he got the chance. He went to visit her grave about 10 years ago.
