I got summoned once. I don't work so i was surprised to be summoned. Turned out when i registered to vote thats how they got my info and stuff. But, this is bad, i didn't go. Didn't even open the letter. My dad simply asked me if i wanted to go , i was like who wants to go to jury duty? He took the letter and tossed it unopened. He said i can claim i never got the letter in the mail. I was 18 at the time so thought eh whatever. But there is legal ways to get out of jury duty.

All my family and friends... They go, and even though ur summoned you might not have to serve. They lottery pick out of the all people summoned. Then the selected group is tested via questions. ( You know so the jury isn't bias, they aren't going to put for instance someone who is racist to pass a verdict on a group they have prejudices against) If your actually picked for the jury, it could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. It really depends on what case you get. people i knew that actually served only had to stay there a few hours. But, all my family and friends just go and hardly make it pass the lottery selection. Most of the people i know just go or call and ask to defer their summons because of work or school.

I got summoned back when I was 19. I got to get out of it though cause I had a young child who wasn't in school and the fact that I didn't work and stayed home to take care of her allowed me to get out of it. So there are several ways to get out of it. but from what I hear if you get chosen they do pay you although probably not much...

From what i heard from family and friend, it really depends on your job. If you have like a teaching or gov't or agency job- then yah, ur excused from work and wont miss that days pay- although ur required to return if you finish jury duty before work hours are out.

Lucky me. The year I choose not to go back to school for the semester and this happens... So much for getting out of it *legally*. My brother was summoned last year. He went and spent the whole day at the court house just waiting around basically. Sounds like a good time. Rolling Eyes

I guess I'm going, but I just need to find a ride first. Hopefully I won't get picked for the jury since I don't even think I could make it back there for a second or third day. But if for some reason they do choose me, I won't get paid will I? Since I don't have a job and all...

No, to my knowledge you wont get paid because its part of your "civic duty". You can try to use that not having a ride as an excuse? I live in NY so i can't use that as an excuse with all the public transportation and cab services but hey if you live somewhere secluded i say milk it lol.

yeah if you don't want to do it, I say try your best to get out of it...The worst thing that'll happen is they make you do it anyway...

You should get paid for your Jury Duty (if you're chosen). In Canada at least it used to be you got paid $5 a day. It was a token amount of money.

I got summoned once. But I was in University at the time. I was like, "I can't take time out from school! What if I got a murder case that goes forever? Forget that!" I made some calls, and I got together the needed documents, such as a school transcript and a copy of my school ID card. I went down to the courthouse (or wherever it was I had to go) and handed in my stuff and said, "I need to be excused". And I was. No big deal.
