One man band Owl City recently released it's new album “All things bright and Beautiful”. All Things Bright and Beautiful includes 12 tracks, as well as a new version of the single “Alligator Sky”. The entire album is very Owl City, with much of it very similar to their previous tracks from “Ocean Eyes”, Owl City’s previous album.
Alligator Sky is the lead single from the record, and has done very well on the… German and Danish Charts? So far, the track hasn’t hit the American Charts. There have been several versions of Alligator Sky released, the main version featuring rapper Shawn Chrystopher. An edit has also been released in which the rap is removed and replaced with verses by Adam Young (the man behind Owl City). Both versions are very catchy, but the edited version wins. The words, slightly disorganized, seem to describe a trip into the ‘Alligator Sky”. Just as Adam Young’s previous hit “Fireflies”, the song as a whole uses effects, chords, and words that make the song sound “dreamy” (lacking a better word), in that way that made us like Fireflies so much. Overall a great song to add to your collection.
Deer in the Headlights, the 3rd single, changes style completely. Moving to a complete Dance track, Deer in the Headlights describes the singer noticing 2 girls (1 in each verse), and the first one sprayed him with pepper spray, the 2nd punching him. He feels like it was love at first sight, and he was the deer in the headlights. The lyrics are very well written, and he mixed in a good amount of humor. The chords, tune, and beat all fit well, and Young’s smooth voice performs the whole song perfectly

Galaxies, the 2nd single from the new album, mellows a bit from Deer in the Headlights (beat-wise), but maintains the dance-track feel. The lyrics seem actually to be written with some Christian Lyrics:
“Oh, Telescope keep an eye on my only hope. / Lest I blink and be swept off the narrow road / Hercules, You’ve got nothing to say to me / cause you’re not the blinding light that I need / For He is the saving grace of the Galaxies / Dear God I was terribly lost / when the galaxies crossed / and the sun went dark / dear god you’re the only north star / I would follow this far”
The lyrics are definitely messy, and make it hard for the listener to figure out what Young is singing about, and much of Owl City’s music seems to be like that. The rest of the song, the tune, chords and beat, is very good. And pretty impressive, knowing that Adam Young wrote and performed every piece of this by himself.
Most of the album sticks to the two styles used
porn star search in his singles - the first where it sounds like it popped out of a dream, the second which goes to the average Dance Track style. All the songs are well written, the only place where Owl City’s Adam Young could improve would be in the improvement of his lyrics. They tend to be disorganized at times, and rarely have much depth (which, while not important to many listeners, is loved by others). Overall a great album, and I expect it will pass up it’s predecessor “Ocean Eyes” in popularity.
